For Dr. Alphonso Sanders, Valley professor and director of Greenwood Little Theatre’s upcoming production of the musical “Dreamgirls,” it’s a first stab at directing a full-length musical production.

“Love Letters,” a play by A.R. Gurney that features the lifelong correspondence between two childhood friends, opens Thursday evening at the J.M. Whittington Jr. Playhouse.

The 1944 existentialist French play written by Jean-Paul Sartre and adapted for American audiences by Paul Bowles features drama and comedy, said the play’s director, Nichole Henry.

Henry’s passion for theater took off after her 10th-grade performance in “Bullshot Crummond,” a detective comedy set in the pre-World War II era. After that show, she was hooked.

For many members of the Greenwood Shakespeare Project, participating is about more than learning neat new skills, such as sewing, carpentry or painting, or learning more about a poet and playwright largely considered the greatest writer in the English language. 

“Suddenly, Last Summer” centers around two women who share startlingly different accounts of the life and death of a man who was an important part of their lives.

Auditions for the fourth and final show of Greenwood Little Theatre’s 61st season will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the theater.

Beattie, who moved to Greenwood more than 30 years ago, has been heavily involved in leadership roles in the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce, the Community Kitchen and Greenwood Little Theatre.
