GLT to hold auditions for upcoming play

Auditions for the fourth and final show of Greenwood Little Theatre’s 61st season will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the theater.

Director Eddie Amelung, along with Assistant Director Will Perkins, is bringing the gripping Southern Gothic classic “Suddenly, Last Summer,” written by Mississippi native Tennessee Williams, to the GLT stage. The show will run for four performances from June 22 to 25.

Set in the Garden District of New Orleans, “Suddenly, Last Summer” features two women who share startlingly different accounts of the life and death of a man who was an important part of their lives, and who was killed in Spain under mysterious circumstances — suddenly, last summer.  

A dark drama with a sinister ending, this classic play depicts how society, greedy relatives and mental health professionals of the 1950s treat a traumatized young woman.  

Williams’s writing and powerful imagery draws the audience into the story.

The play was adapted for film in 1959 and starred Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, who received Oscar nominations, and Montgomery Clift.  

Later, a PBS film adaptation was broadcast in 1993 and starred Maggie Smith, Natasha Richardson and Rob Lowe.  

“The Little Theatre’s version of this absorbing drama promises to be a sizzling night of summer theater that won't soon be forgotten,” said Amelung.

Parts are available for two men and five women, featuring three main characters and four supporting roles.

Due to the nature of this play and its mature content, there are no roles for children or teens.
