Davis Elementary School is in line to receive a variety of improvements pending the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated District School Board attorney’s approval of a $5,000 grant.

GLT Board member Jon Peede talks about his reasons for moving to Greenwood, his experience in promoting the arts in Mississippi, and his advice on how to garner more support for the arts in Greenwood.

“The show could be best described as a comedic farce,” Powers said — but that comedy overlays themes of marriage, grief and loss throughout the play.

The GLCSD board gave approval for the theater to install a professional lighting system — to be provided by the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale — and four sections of aisle seating for people who use wheelchairs.

Bylaw updates at the Greenwood Little Theatre are paving the way for future opportunities, according to board President Pam Powers. “The updates really aren’t about changes at all but about new opportunities.”

“‘Steel Magnolias’ is the quintessential Southern play,” said Bethany Tarpley, who portrays M’Lynn. “The whole cast quotes portions of it to each other all the time. We have all become so close, and I think the chemistry translates onstage.”

Greenwood Little Theatre will soon hold auditions for cast and crew for its summer production of “Steel Magnolias,” its final performance for the season.

“It is about two friends who couldn’t be more different,” said Perkins. “One is a slob; one is a neat freak and very organized and regimented. Through a series of relationship mishaps, they find themselves as roommates together in Oscar’s New York City apartment.”

The Little Theatre, which had been holding its productions at the W.M. Whittington Jr. Playhouse since 1967, shifted to the auditorium of Davis Elementary School last year. It will be putting on its second production in those new surroundings later this month, with the Neil Simon comedy “The Odd Couple” set to run March 24-27.

Although 2020 may have been the year of cancellations for Greenwood Little Theatre productions due to the pandemic, 2021 has signified a path back to normalcy, as one member put it.
