From the Airwaves to the Stage: Gwendolyn Riley's Journey in Greenwood
Gwendolyn Riley, a Chicago native who found her second home in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, has become an integral part of the local community, leaving an indelible mark through her captivating voice and vibrant personality. The Greenwood Commonwealth recently featured this remarkable woman, shedding light on her journey from the bustling city of Chicago to the serene landscapes of Greenwood.
Gwendolyn Riley, now 67, has been a fixture on the gospel radio scene for over 18 years. Her most recent spotlight came as she took on the role of mistress of ceremonies and lent her voice in song during the annual observance honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
In a recent interview with Jeff Byrd, a staff writer at the Greenwood Commonwealth, Riley shared her connection with the Civil Rights Movement and how Dr. King's legacy has influenced her life. "Now, being an active participant, I get to participate in this historic change," she expressed during the MLK Day event.
Riley's journey to Greenwood was not a straightforward one. In 1975, her mother beckoned her to the Mississippi Delta, and despite initial reservations, Riley found that the move was the best thing that ever happened to her. She not only found love, marrying Marshel Noel Riley Sr., but also built a family, becoming a mother to five children and a grandmother to 16 grandchildren.
While Riley has worn many hats in Greenwood, including a stint as a patient representative at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, she is best known for her 18-year tenure on gospel radio. She graced the airwaves of WGRM 93.9 and WKXG 1540 AM, spinning and discussing gospel music that resonated with the community.
Following her radio career, Riley found a new stage at Greenwood Little Theatre, where she indulges her passion for musical theater. "I love musicals. Oh God, my favorite is ‘Joseph and (the Amazing) Technicolor Dreamcoat.’ And any of Andrew Lloyd Webber (productions). They are all favorites," she gushed.
Riley's dedication to the community extended beyond the radio waves and theater stage. During her time at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, she handled patient complaints, ensuring their voices were heard. Despite facing some resistance from department heads, Riley approached her role with a sense of duty, aiming for the betterment of hospital patients.
As we celebrate the vibrant tapestry of diversity and talent within our community, Gwendolyn Riley stands as a shining example of someone who embraced change, contributed to history, and continues to bring joy through her love of music and theater. Greenwood Little Theatre is honored to have her as a part of our community, and we look forward to witnessing the continued chapters of her inspiring journey.
